TRAIN 411…the latest and greatest

Greetings!

Do you ever get the urge to read someone else’s letters?  You can admit it to me…I’ll keep our secret!  Sshhh!  I’m giving you below a vicarious peek at a dear friend’s email message to me.  I’m sharing it because 1) Gwen loves publicity and I like to make her happy 2) what she said really struck a chord with me and 3)  what she says really applies to all of us.

Here she speaks tenderly of her father, Mel, an ailing nonagenarian! (a person in his 90s!)  He was a high-flying CEO in Manhattan back in the day, but is now living his sunset years with his wife, Frannie, who is in her late 80s’s, in Phoenix.

“Hello my love ,
Back from Phoenix, so glad I went. I feel I really picked up Mel’s spirits and got him into the pool to walk laps, he was too afraid to try to do actual swimming, I will tackle that next time. I walked to the end of their street and back to the driveway one time only, he tired and was afraid to go further or  repeat the walk again the following day. My mother has him so worried that he might fall or die on the spot with a heart attack, he is now paralyzed mentally to push himself  to walk a step. Her HELP is actually killing him. It is so awful to watch. Sallie [Gwen's sister] and I make him move, that is his only hope to stave off degeneration and allow his body to simply shut down.

The lesson here is ; what we are doing, every week of the year, year in year out, by keeping up this tennis, this cardio, this resistance training, it all makes a huge difference on how we will experience advanced age. When they say ” use it or lose it “, this is no cute quip. It is damn serious. Just as we attack our beloved crossword puzzles to keep our mind nimble, so too our bodies must have the same attention. You will live not only a long life, but a far better old age due to your extraordinary fitness level. I am consistently awed by you. You are some great lady, not to mention my precious and adored friend. I count few of those in my life, and for those very few ( which is all anyone needs ) I am grateful for you, and Danny and Susan, from Toronto, you all enrich my life, add smiles to my days, and support me in tougher times.

This turned out to be a love letter of sorts I see.  My intention was to applaud your devotion to keeping active for the fun of it, and for the generous results it pays us back for a future of better and improved old age. You make a  contribution to the quality of life of many many people on an every day basis. I applaud you, and I humbly thank you.”

Ok, ok….never mind the plaudits to me.  I’m actually embarrassed about those parts of the email.  I didn’t share this because I needed more pats in the back.

I’m sharing this because we ALL have parents.  Many of you are fortunate to have both or one still living; perhaps you or a family member also experiences the issues related to caring for our elders.  We also ALL promote activity, right?  You wouldn’t be getting this newsletter if you didn’t step into TRAIN in the first place.  So, the point is this:  Let’s stay active until we die, keep our moms and dads hopping, promote pursuits, physical and intellectual, to everyone around us and live, long, diverse, healthful lives!

Have a fantastic summer!!!!  Keep hydrated as the temperatures rise and remember to keep moving!

Sincerely,
Mylene and the rest of the staff

P.S.:  I write this newsletter while I’m here in Scottsdale.  I’m having lunch tomorrow with Mel and Frannie and look forward to seeing them, gaining wisdom from their years of golf, kvetching about the news and, perhaps, taking them both for a swim in their pool.  Afterward, Frannie is driving me back to my hotel.

No More Muffin Tops!

Those beautiful red poppies are not in the opium fields of Afghanistan but rather they are a harbinger of my favorite season, summer!  And summer is the time of year to flaunt, baby, flaunt!  If you’ve got it, show it!  If you haven’t got it, work on it!  This is LA after all, the land of make believe and transformation.

I myself embarked on refining my diet and workout regimen as I prepared to wear a bikini for 9 straight days in the Caribbean–a shuddering thought regardless of your body fat percentage.  With discipline and gumption I didn’t realize I had, I lost 8 pounds in about 35 days. How?  …by swearing off alcohol along with indiscriminate eating and upping my cardio. Yes, it was difficult as I am such a hedonist; but, the results were so worth the effort.  There’s nothing more gratifying to hear “hey, you look great!”  as I near my mid-40’s.  Keep it coming, I say!

So how does one do it???  Despite my living in a gym 24/7, I had to have a plan.  Fortunately, I had a dream vacation with a hunk (woohoo!) to motivate me.  I kept my current exercise regimen of lifting thrice weekly the same but added 2 cycling classes a week, forsook wine after work and eating carbs after 3pm.  It worked for me!  So, set a target date, visualize your reasonable end result and get serious.  You need to internalize this desire.  All yack and no sack won’t cut it!  Back it up with effort and you will see your transformation for real.

Diet and Exercise.  We got the exercise covered but what you put in your mouth outside of TRAIN (ok, I set myself up for that one)  is up to you!  Muffins….well, maybe on occasion.  But muffin tops??!!?%#%^$!!  Banish the thought!  Erase the visual!  A waterbed is a piece of 70s furniture, not a belt!  OK??!  ’nuff sed on this topic.

Sincerely,
Mylene

Olympic edition

Greetings!

Now that this quadrennial’s blockbuster Olympics is winding down, it’s interesting to note that there has been an increased range of diversity in our world’s athletes. It’s been especially affirming to see the unbelievably fit 41 year-old Dara Torres competing yet again and even bagging some heavy metal home. You REALLY go girl! (Hmmm, I wonder if I have a chance? Synchronized swimming, perhaps? More like synchronized shopping! I think I better stick to my knitting.)

The world of sports at this hyper-elite level just lends itself to youth but the strong, the motivated, the disciplined simply defy these age barriers. Take Oksana Chusovitina, the 33 year-old gymnast tumbling amidst a sea of densely muscled pre-pubescents. From Uzbekistan, Oksana had to migrate to Germany to seek urgent life-saving medical care for her leukemia-stricken son. Now representing Germany in her 5th Olympics, she does gymnastics to care for her son who is now cured. “I don’t know how she does it,” said U.S. gymnast Alicia Sacramone, one of the medal favorites in the vault. “I’m 20 and my back hurts, my knees hurt, I think I have arthritis. She’s a role model to so many of us.”

There have been other incredibly inspiring athletic feats like the ocean swimmer Natalie DuToit who made her Olympic debut as the first amputee competitor. OK?! Not to be defeated by a devastating road accident, she swam her heart out and eventually into the world’s hearts and minds.

As much as Michael Phelps’ Herculean once-in-a-lifetime achievement, Usain Bolt’s lightning fast sprints and the US Redeem Team’s newfound team spirit are much heralded for their world-record shattering performances and eyeball goggling exploits, there are many more athletes in these games that have found little to no air time or even worse, featured in the agonies of defeat. Lolo Jones’s stumbling into the 9th hurdle in track and Sanya Richards’ running out of gas in races that were theirs are so devastating after years and years of training for a global competition that lasts less than a minute. The drama of these games truly runs the gamut and is representative of the human range of achievement, emotion, grace and heroic ability to stand up and try again.

We live in SoCal, a geography outlined with sun-drenched beaches. Channel your inner May-Treanor or Dallhauser and spike a few volleyballs in your own backyard. So, you don’t think you can come to the gym today? Feeling a bit tired? You think you’re too old to try that Cycling class? Think again. You can do it. Natalie DuToit did it with one leg. We are all human in all our glorious diverse forms and we can all achieve.

Labor Day is coming up! Stay tuned for another newsletter announcing gym hours and special CYCLE class schedule.

Get onboard. Stay fit.

Greetings

Saturday, June 14th, 2008, commemorates an astonishing fact–our 5th year anniversary here at TRAIN West Hollywood!  Yes, it has been an incredible whirlwind.  One of those factoids that make you smack your forehead in disbelief.  This half a decade that just flew must only mean that we have been having so much fun!   And, yes, it has been fun AND unbelievable, insane, stressful, wacky, educational, eye-opening and, at the end of the day, gut-bustingly worthwhile.  We have seen many changes throughout these years:  trainers and clients circulating through, the neighborhood morphing into Rodeo Drive East, acquaintances and personnel going through life stage changes, passings of loved ones, similar gyms coming and going-yet, we have remained here, solid and stalwart, aiming to please and provide our humble best in the competitive LA culture of a-go-go private gyms.

Entrepreunership has its joys and heartaches but I can only honestly say that this venture, our labor of love, has brought us new friends, opened new avenues, reinvigorated and inspired others and added vitality and years to all our lives.  Being surrounded by fitness and a positive, life-affirming atmosphere is such a different mindset from our  cultural all-American grind for the dollar.   TRAIN represents and is a haven from the usual grind of modern life–a time and place for us to do something selfishly good for our minds and bodies–exercise and physical activity that prolong and add quality to the way we live.

Thank you to all of you who have and continue to support our funky, quirky enterprise.  We look forward to forging on for many, many more fit and chiselled years.  On that note, we are optimistically planning our move to our new location where we will go decidedly uptown in our look and feel yet retain that unique TRAIN vibe.  A Yelp review likened it to your local “Cheers.”  We project to make our move in 3 to 6 months; so, stay tuned.  The next 5 years should just fly by as quickly as your last set of lunges!
