Tips for a Healthier Thanksgiving

November 22, 2011 by

Don’t waste all your hard work at the gym with a blowout at the table over the holidays.  Here’s a holiday strategy to keep yourself in shopping shape!

1) Get Active

Get an early workout in to set the tone for the special day.  Fight that irresistible urge to veg and camp out watching a Mad Men marathon or football games galore.  (Do that when you’re home sick!)

2) Eat Breakfast
Don’t lose your mind and throw good habits out the window just ’cause it’s a holiday.  Eat a normal, healthful breakfast so that you tide yourself and not end up snacking all day in the kitchen with the cooks.
3) Police Your Portions
Your mantra is “A little dab will do ya!” Say it over and over as you start your meal(s!).
4) Slowly Savor
No scarfing please; repeated studies have proven that slower eaters eat less.  Besides, all that food was cooked with a lot of love.  Revel in it!
5) Go Easy On Alcohol
Lots of calories can be saved by heeding this advice.  Besides, who wants to have a hangover for Black Friday?!
6) Be Realistic
Hey!  It’s Thanksgiving so enjoy it and all that it means to you, your family and friends.   You’re not trying out for the London Olympics!

We will be open on Thanksgiving Day!

A Client Story to Blow Your Mind: Steven Levy’s Transformation

July 8, 2011 by

Q: Steve, what motivated you to live a healthier lifestyle?
A: After being given my 7th prescription medication and then being diagnosed with sleep apnea (needing to wear a mask at night to breathe while I slept), I was finally done!

Q: What has “kept it off?”
A: Eating right and exercising.  It’s no secret.

Q: How long did this total transformation take?
A: I lost the original 160 pounds in one year.  Yes, one year.  I never worked so hard at anything in my life.  I then found the brilliant Alex Agurto who has literally helped me to transform my body completely.

Q: Was there ever a moment of weakness…like ‘no way, I can’t do this! I’m going to be fat forever!  ugghhhh!’ What kept you going?
A: Never a moment of weakness.  Plateauing it is very frustrating, but you have to stick it out and the weight will eventually drop again.   The constant compliments kept me going and having an amazing trainer helped too.

Q: What’s the BEST comment someone said to you about your new physique?
A: I loved that people had no idea who I was.  I remember opening up the front door to my house (we were having company) and my friend Marc said to me, “Hi, I’m Marc.”  I told him it was me and he nearly had a heart attack.  I really loved that moment.

Q: What was the bigger differentiator? diet or exercise? lifting or spinning?
A: All of the above.  I love all those workouts for different reasons, but I ultimately found that weight lifting and spinning work best for me.

Q: What is your fitness regimen today?
A: I work out with my trainer Alex doing weights 4 days a week, and I spin 3 days a week.

Q: What do you get out of private training?
A: Alex really has gotten to know my body and what works best for me.  My body has literally transformed since we starting working together.  He is exceptional beyond belief.  I am beyond lucky to have him.

Q: How do you like working with Alex?
A: Working with Alex is like nothing I’ve ever experienced.  He is fun, kind, smart, caring, sweet, hard, compassionate, funny, supportive, energetic, happy, just so special.  I couldn’t do any of this without him.  He always tries new things, continually motivates     me, and ALWAYS makes it fun.  He really listens to what I say and has learned what I like and don’t like.

Q: What’s the GREATEST thing about feeling and looking hot, hot, hot?!
A: I remember I used to cry (literally) if I ever had to take my shirt off in public.   I had breasts and was truly obese.  I was deeply ashamed of what I looked like.  I now take my shirt of whenever I can.  I am proud of my body and what I look like.  This is something I never dreamed was possible.  I am also happier than I’ve ever been and my business is the best it’s ever been as well.

You can see Steve several mornings a week here at TRAIN lifting and chiseling deeper cuts into his physique with Alex Agurto, his trainer.
