Truth #1: Chronic Diseases are the #1 cause of death and disability in the U.S.

Truth #2: Chronic diseases account for 75% of the nation’s health care spending.

Truth #3: About two-thirds of the rise in health care spending is due to the rise in the prevalence of treated chronic disease.

Truth #4: The doubling of obesity between 1987 and today accounts for nearly 30% of the rise in health care spending.

Truth #5: The vast majority of cases of chronic disease could be better prevented or managed.

alison-gordon“Never buy insurance for something for which you can reasonably afford to pay yourself.”

You don’t have car insurance to pay for a flat tire.  You don’t have renter’s insurance in the event you lose your keys.    And you don’t want to have health insurance to pay for every little boo-boo… take care of the easier-to-budget expenses yourself.   By having a high deductible your monthly premium will be lower, making it easier to have health insurance to protect you against high-cost medical expenses.

As many of you know, I am an avid dog person and many of you have befriended our mascot, Dr J.

We have clearance from the health department that dogs can be at the gym in our offices such as Gracie, an unbelievably cute Pekingese.  Jen Dana, one of our cyclers, brings Gracie whenever she cycles.  Gracie loves to spend time on my desk!

Steven Before and Now

Steven Levy before

One of the true joys i get to experience here at TRAIN is getting to meet the most interesting and warm people I’ve ever run across.  One of those is Steven Levy, Allan Anderson’s client.  His infectious joy and energy made me gravitate toward him naturally.  When he told me what he went through, I just HAD to feature him in our newsletter.  Here’s his incredibly inspiring story:

We often see those incredible weight loss ads in the backs of magazines advertising supplements or the latest exercise gizmo.  Many times, we hear about it on Oprah.  However, when you hear the story from A REAL LIVE PERSON IN FRONT OF YOU, one really stands up and takes notice.  Steven Levy topped out at 317 pounds in November 2006.  When he got his 7th prescription medication and was diagnosed with sleep apnea (and had to use a CPAP machine to breathe while he slept) he’d had enough!  According to Steven, “I was so sad back then.  I never wanted to leave my house and ate almost all my meals in.  Being in the entertainment industry I DREADED if I had to go to a premiere, television taping, screening, etc.”  He finally went through gastric bypass surgery 20 months ago and also embarked on a fitness program.  Per Steven, “while I was losing the weight I did an hour of cardio EVERY day, 7 days a week.  I did an hour on the treadmill at a speed of 4.5 and a 9.0 incline.  I obviously didn’t start at this…I gradually worked my way up to this regime which I did for an entire year.”

For the past 8 months, Steven has worked out with his trainer 3 days a week and he religiously cycles 2 days a week.  “Cycling teacher, Janet Fitzgerald, really helped change my life,” says Steven.

Steven now

“Now, I LOVE to go EVERYWHERE.  I especially love seeing old friends I haven’t seen in a while.  Most people don’t recognize me and truly have no idea who I am.  I love it.  I have a whole new life…it’s really incredible!
When I was 317 pounds and morbidly obese I NEVER DREAMED the life I have today could be possible.  If you exercise regularly, you can eat anything you want within reason.  Most importantly, if you believe in yourself, really believe, ANYTHING is possible.  I am living proof.”

Here’s Steven’s advise for those in the weight loss journey:  “Losing weight can be fun.  Just take each day as it comes and do the best you can.  If you have a slip, don’t beat yourself up, just accept it and move on.  Always remember that tomorrow is another day.”
